I'm thinking of starting up a night...

no caps. I dont live where you live, but I wouldnt go to a night with that policy on principle. understand what you're saying I guess. ... just dont like the thought of it at all.
but fighting isnt a big prob with dnb here, so its good.

If you had hip-hop as like a warmup and opened up a bit earlier then wouldn't you get two different crowds equalling more people? Just a thought I don't know ANYTHING about promoting, but I thought I'd reply to say that I'd come! It's only across the river from me and with a lack of drum and bass over my side in Essex, you might be able to get a few ravers from over my way if you promoted well!
might do a bit of promotion down that way too then :2thumbs: look forward to seeing you there!

Agree with all the below.

Remember that promo is the key. Promote the ass of the first night, make sure everyone you know is there so there's an aptmosphere.

On the venue side smaller is definitely better. I started off years back with the first Afrodisia in a place with 200 capacity. Rammed it almost every night from thereon in.

Drop me a pm if you need any other info.

The idea of help is safe and its a large financial risk to hold these things ive got friends still paying them off years later.

go with a small club night: friendly cosy vice (if it has potential then this will cater for winter) liquid or funky party d&b.

id advise you start pinning up a poster or two in kent : universitys (are a great source to tap), local bars, forums, shops etc advertising your plans simplistically: find a partner

cost less for you: more fun: better combination of ideas to throw around

get in there my son
its an awsome feeling.

I get 5000 a7 flyers for £65 - design about £20

and I get all the local djs - peeps on the radio station to try to help promote it - the novelty wears off for alot of them I think but you find out whos hearts in it and whos not...

It good fun, and even if your new, do what peep say, start off small with little overheads, cheap entry to get people in, and your onto a winner really :)

Oh and when u're talking about flyers. Check out my work here. And if u like it i am sure we can talk about some fine price.

About the organisation... i just want to say that sometimes u can't realize somethings that will be needed if u don't have any experience.

- start small
- make sure u are doing it for the right reasons
- book your mates to play
- make sure your friends come
- dont let any unbooked DJs or MCs come and blag their way on
- make an effort with your promotion
- do something different to what's already out there!
- dont try and make money to start with - people like good value

I would agree with most of that.

Here's some other thoughts in no order:

Work out what it is are trying to do: i.e. put on a regular dnb night, give people a chance to play out, get big names down, etc...

I'd recommend having 1 or 2 nights planned to start, see how it goes and take it from there...

Re: 2 rooms. 1 room is always going to be busier and vibier than the other. Don't try and do too much at first. Try and get your main room working first, you can add a second room later.

Think about what kind of night you want to put on, re: what style of dnb etc, what type of MCs (and how many).

IMO, trouble often goes together with MC heavy nights. Dress codes might put some people off, (specially if it's a venue they don't know, cos it can look uptight) and not especially the ones who'd cause trouble.

I know people in London who are putting on regular free entry nights in 200 ish capacity bars / small clubs. The venue don't charge anything and pay the promoter a % of the bar take. Meaning a promoter can try out / put on a successful small night, get a bit of money back and get a crowd in, and start building the name up. One night I know does dnb on a Tuesday night for free before 10, £3 after. Sometimes they do big names (Andy C & residents) at £5 or 6 all night and keep it ticking along and varied like that.

Consider Student Union venues, if there's anything local. Some might not let not students in, but many do. Good way to do summat cheap.

Venues want paying punters and big bar takes. A full club / free entry bar night is better than a nearly empty £5 a head night. And will get you more dates offered by the venue.

Try to get some residents / regulars together. Hopefully as the night builds up everyone builds up their names.

Think about if / how much people will pay to see local DJs they haven't heard off. Just cos it's a dnb night is only gonna get so many people in, in itself.

I wouldn't worry about lack of experience. Common sense goes a long. New problems happens all the time, that you can't anticipate.

I'll have a think. Gotta rush off now.

plenty of advice there :2thumbs:, its very much appreciated - thanks. i agree about thinijng whether people will come to a night with only local DJ's. im thinking of getting 1 big(ish) name down there whether it be DJ or MC. i know a lot newer people to the dnb scene appreciate MC's as much as DJ's so i'm undecided yet. i'm trying to think of heard of names who also arnt going to stretch my budget to crazy amounts. people i hear who are quite resonably priced are nicky blackmarket, dr s gachet and 1 or 2 others. they may not be the best there is but i'm pretty sure there is a large number of dnb fans (particularly in my area) who will pay just cos they know the name. im convinced this will draw a few more people in, would you recommend it though? persoanlly i don't know if people will come to the night if its just local DJ's simply because they havnt heard of them. however, im reluctant to pay for fairly well heard of DJ or MC on my first night cos it could mean a much bigger loss if it does all go wrong. any ideas anyone? :2thumbs: thanks again to all who have replied so far

sounds sweet like a bitch with haribo tits! if this one goes well man i think you should get q project next time man!

Shame Maidstone's only about 10-15 minutes drive from where I live in Essex but I'll be in Portsmouth by November! Good luck anyway and don't forget to get a few flyers round my way cause there's no drum and bass here I'm sure you'd get a few people to travel down. Some flyering in Romford/Basildon would probabaly go down quite well if you don't know the area!
