rather than utility tool, envision in your mind how a drum kit is set up on stage... this seriously helps add feasible width to your drums

kick = center
snare = center
hat = pan R slightly
crash = pan L slightly
shaker = pan L slightly
tamb = pan R slightly

etc. etc. etc.

yes derelics might be right, excuse me, after hearing some tracks its mostly used mono indeed. I probably mixed it up with panning (thats what i do mostly for all my percussion, it makes room for the other elements of ur track)
