If your using a computer then any recording software will do, there are tons of programs all ranging in prices. I happen to use Pro-Tools HD system with a Mac G5. A good computer and sound card are the most important. you can download these programs for free just to try out.
for P.C. try SOUNDFORGE
for a MAC try AUDACITY.
cables can make a difference but theres no need to spend 2 much money on them.
if u dont have a computer then u can go the old fashioned route and use a DAT or tape machine.

oh yeah, weed helps to create the mix but it doesnt do anything for the recording part.
