Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

Sounds like a sawtooth wave, mixed with some square and sine.

It's some lowpass work in there. Shouldn't be that hard to make. I might show how to make it myself if I get the time.
Saw Mixed with Square, a bit of distortion chorus and mids are removed with a EQ

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

Much of this has probably already been covered, but I wanted to contribute some of my nerd nolidge to the thread.

Sweeping effects are usually some kind of notch filter. A comb filter is a series of notches. Great. Here's where it gets interesting: a comb filter and a digital flanger are the same thing. No, you say, it isn't so!

Analog filters work much differently (AKA, better) than digital filters. In order to create a low pass or any other filter type digitally, digital delay is used. Playing two copies of the same signal with one slightly delayed will result in certain frequencies being canceled out. Digital filter design depends on complex mathematics (imaginary numbers) to create the equivalent of an analog filter that is simply a resistor and a capacitor.

But I digress. A flanger is indeed a delay line, complete with feedback and delay length control. It's just that the flanger is tuned to very small delay lengths, delay lengths that are not perceivable rhythms, that is, rhythms that are less than 50ms apart (greater than 20Hz [cycles per second] in frequency). A low feedback on a flanger is like having two copies of the signal; one normal, the other delayed by a variable amount between 0ms and 50ms. That's a notch filter. Turning up the feedback creates more notches. Like, normal signal, signal delayed by 5ms, delayed by 5ms again (10ms) and so on. So a high feedback flanger is a comb filter. One of my favorite effects for making more abstract psychedelic music is to take advantage of that and gradually bring what sounds like a dub reggae style delay in close so that it becomes a flanger. This is kind of similar to glitches that enter the audible frequency range common in breakcore.

Phasers are a much more satisfying effect but are way more complicated and in my experience it's "the sound you want until you put it in your reese." I've never found a phaser that sounded good pre or post distortion. I'd love to find one.

The more oldschool reese sound was sorta similar, it was just detuned waves. The sweeping sound follows the same principals as a flanger (you're creating a notch-like filter) detune it a lot and it's happy hardcore hoovers, detune it just right and it's Evol Intent's "The Rapture" It's important to note that detuning the waves is slightly different than delaying one by variable amounts - in theory it shouldn't make a difference but to my ear it does. I can't say enough about this - make multiple copies of your reeses and play around with detuning them. Best if you can do so at high sampling rate. It's fine to start with the raw detuned waves that have the distinctive sweep, but imagine doing that post FX - AFAIK that can only be accomplished manually. I tend to lose any nice sweeping sounds in distortions and other FX, this would be a way to bring them in again. And yeah, this is all supposedly what a "chorus" effect does, but really, have you ever used that for anything but adding a subtle fatness to the sound? But then again I don't really use VSTs.

Damn, I'm getting a little excited, gonna go try this out a bit myself.

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

HI, allow me to introduce myself.
I'm an 18 year old DNB dj who'd like to take a look at the producing side. However I'm totally new to this. I'm using reason 4 and i've looked at some basic tutorials from Boyinaband.com. I've read all over this forum and learnt some cool stuff, but the problem is that I don't have the NI software or Z3Ta+ etc. I might download it if it's the only way but for now I'd like to get to know reason better.

What I'm actually looking for is a bassline similar or identical to jaydan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkqHg2b9o7Q

or sub zero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnT3Ugw7hpY

and maybe pleasure if possible:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Yeer0rWJLo

from this last one, i'd like to know how to make a similar attacking sound (I obviously don't know what it's called :s)
thanks for reading this
cheers

Ah Ha! Jump up!

Really?

Query this bidness if you're not already familiar:
Filter envelope -> attack = "wah". LFO. Lo pass filter (LPF). Sawtooth wave. Square wave. Hoover. Detune. Chorus.

All this can be done in Reason 4.0. Start with a Thor, right click, initialize patch, use one oscillator and make it the "multi-osc" set to sawtooth or square, fiddle, make it work, add more. Make a Scream 4, but then you'll really need to dig into EQ'ing.

The only way I know of to get that more metallic dubstep sound is to run that Thor sound into the B512 vocoder, switch it to EQ mode, then fiddle with how many bands there are (512, 32, 16, etc.) and play with the levels of the bands.

Create an envelope controlled filter. It can receive a "gate trigger" so that you don't have to automate. But you'll have more fun and hopefully lose interest in jump-up once you right click on "frequency" and click "edit automation".

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

Man this took me ages to do lol!

Right here goes :

This is a bassline from one of my tunes done about a year ago, theres a 320 of the tune and a clip of the bass, ive used it very little in the tune, even tho i went thru quite a long process to make it lol always the way!
Also its more a highend added noise that accompanies the bass than the main part of the tune?

Now im not sayin this is amazing and im constantly learning so i may of done a few things wrong an gone a lil over the top with fx an wat not, but u can take or leave wat i say, on this occasion it worked out an its all been done from scratch which is the most important thing!!!!!! Trial an error!

For this you will need Frutiy loops 6or 8 this was done on 6 but ive upgraded since, massive vst to make a standard square/saw (wt- postion was in the middle of the squ-sw1setting) wave with no fx no boosts or anything. Export it as c3 then stick it in kontakt2
If you dont have these then follow the methods with your own bass and u may end up with much better results???
I also used vsts like the filtervst tube screamer, ohm boys delay, univibe, the waves reverb and c1 compression.
If u have alternatives to these use them.

Right im going to try explain this as best i can giving exact details to the positioning of knobs, numbers etc, if any 1 has any queries in what i have said mention it so i can edit the post cause if u dont get it some1 else wont??
Anyway here goes!

Fist off open up fruity add kontakt and load the sample of the squ saw in, add some saturation to the group fx only a little set at *16.8
Next put a tube distortion set at *25.0
Then put a band pass filter with the resonace at *16.8
Then a low pass 6 filter set at *3.7k and the reso at *16.8
On the insert effects add a chorus Depth *63.0, Speed *0.85, Phase at *62.0 with the wet turned down slightly
Also on the insert fx's is another tube distortion with the drive set at *35.8
And a Phaser Depth *50.0 Speed *0.85 Phase *45.0 Feedback *25.0

Ive added a modulator to the tune (pitch) which was an envelope ahdsr its on full whack with the curve set at *-33.2 Attack is on *143.5 and hold n sustain are set to 0 with the decay at *2.1 an release *6.3 while were there the volume envelope is default apart from the release which is set to *90.3

Right after u got that done set a midi link to the cutoff of the band pass filter.......
[To do this click on auto>host automation an drag an drop any of the cc numbers that arent in use to the cutoff knob it should then sat cutoff next to the number ur on remember the number set the port on kontakt to 0 then add a midi out channel to fruity go to the first knob right click configure type a name in the short name bit call it cf or watever then change the controller # to the same number as the one you chose in kontakt hit accept an then right click the knob an automate in piano roll or if u prefer to, creat an automation clip. i did the exact same thing again but with the pitch so repeat the process but add a cc to the tune knob instead.]

Right now for the hard/ looking back on it quite unnecessary part which is a waste of cpu lol but here goes :

Send kontackt to a free fx channel in fruty add the filter vst to the first free channel an turn the mix of it down slightly. Put the setting 6 on which is makin the filters work in series instead of parallel make the first filter a notch pass with the cutt off set at *943khz an the reso at 0 with poles set to 8, second filter turn on an set to high pass cut off set at *177 and resonance at 3% an 4pole. turn on sources 1 and 2 make 1 lfo1, amount +45 and dest, F1 frequency.
Set source 2 to lfo2 +66 an on F2 frequency leave everything default on lfo's 1 and 2 this is just adding some more dynamics, bit minor but helps all in all.

Back to the the fx set number 2 as a tube screamer if u have it, its a type of distortion. Have the gain at *5.984251 tone *5.0393370 level *8.188976
Then add the waves c1 compressor its seems to give it a click/crunch to the beggining of the hits. The make up is set to *16.1 threshhold is *-27.9 ration is *12.85:1 attack n release are default.

Okay now take the fx channel out of the master an link it to another fx this was done about a year ago so i dont see why i done this but im giving u the exact way how to recreate this noise.
Add a waves reverb to the first fx channel, change the reverb type to hall 1 take the low end out of the reverb eq and reverb dampning raise the high end slightly in reverb dammpning. Wet/dry at *100 early ref at *-2.0 Size at *65.7 and time at *1.10 everything else i havent mentioned stays default. (if u have another kind of reverb all i have done is make the high end come out more and sound quite distant. So try to recreat that in watever other program u have.

Second fx is the ohm boys delay with the mix slightly down, have it set to high pass *947.4hz have the amp of the lfo turned up to *44.00 and the per set to *8. turnt he feedback to *51.9 set the delay time to *2beat. have the master lvl turned down slightly an click on the pan and turn the amp up *34.22 an per 1.
This is basically just having it delay at a 2beat rate and filtering out while panning slightly left n right.

Last but not least another waves c1 compression to bring out the delay and reverb alot more in the mix. Have the makeup at *0.9 threshhold at -6 ratio *7.39:1 and attack n release are default again.

Thats the end of this incredibly long and pretty pointless tutorial seeing as the noise isnt that amazing lol but its the process of gettin there that counts!! Hope this is useful to some peeps an i hope you all share more of ur tips an ideas on makin more neuro bass.

Remember its all about the stinkface!

I have to say a special thanks to Polygon/Gravity without him i still think i would be using presets and samples! Safe for helpin me out over the last year and seeing the light!! Big Up an mad Restekpa!!!

*****These are my own personal settings which i made to fit the tune i was doing, obviously u can change an tamper with any of these to make it mold better for your own tune.
Man that sounds pretty dirty. Not that I'm even thinking about using that but still. Well done and you must have balls cause you're willing to share.

I have a tip. Don't try to make identical, you just ruin your creative side. Make sounds based on tutorials yes, it helps, but then tweak sh*t yourself and learn what does what to the sound etc. Never post song that has parts made out of presets or tutorials I just.. Hate.. that. And if you tweak a couple of knobs from a preset I dont consider that as your own sound yet.

I think that they have the Panacea locked in a dungeon and are feeding him quinoa and LSD - whenever he makes a good reese for them they give him a liter of beer.

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

i used to spend hours/days/weeks/months creating basses using the controls in a synth ie z3ta, massivee etc.. however over time i've discovered i can be a lot more inventive by using less of the controls within the synth and actually using vst effects. I now start with a basic oscilator setup (99% of the time in massive) once i've got the right combination of oscilators i might sometimes create the lfo/wobble in massive however alot of the time i've found myself using a tremello vst instead it may not be the most sensible way but i always get the results im looking for. Obviously with a combination of distortion, reverb, filters, stereo widening, compressors, limiters, delays on top to get the finished sound. I'm sure there will be a lot of people who'll dissagree and think im mad for doin this, but just seemed to develop over time. It also makes it easier when splitting the frequencies as everything will have its own individual set of vst effects for me to control....

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

This is probably old news to everyone else. But god damn is camelphat's distortion perfect for reeses.

Eta; also pitch bending reeses is half the sound. That's a puzzle piece that took me a long time to find.

Re: DIRTY BASSLINES EXCHANGE THREAD + HOW2!

Hi,
Am hopeing to get sum advice on making deep liquid/neurofunk sub basslines like "Icicle, Alix Perez, Enei... etc".

Am using FL10 with MASSIVE 1.5 (plus Various N.I instruments & Vsts) but cant seem to find any decent tutorials on this subject.

I can make a simple sustained sub but cant get that deep full body'd minor neuro sub sound...

Any advice/techniques would be much apprieciated...

1 example... (1st drop main bassline)
2nd example... (@1:32 a minor bassline wub)
