How exactly do speakers degrade over time?

I got given this old pair by a friend, and they look really old, probably from the 80s, early 90s but they dont sound too bad. I have heard people saying that speakers produce poorer sound as they get older? Is this true and why?

Suppose it depends on the quality of the speakers material. Have you ever seen some of those old speakers where the rubber surround has been eaten away... they don't sound the same as when they were new!

Actually.... if a speaker is taken proper care of.... they will only ever get better. The only problem is... paper cones.... they are notoriously hard to keep fresh with age.

my days.... so i just googled my speakers that ive been raggin for ages.... apparently they are worth $2800 (i bought them for £50 from a a club owner changing his system). Ridiculous. Surely not. anyway.... JBL Control 8SR are considered to be "Vintage" according to JBL but they have only ever gotten better with age.... they sound far more crisp now than they did when i got them over 10years ago.

leave a pair of speakers for 3 months and the cones tighten back up. my mum has a pair of solid wooden warfdales in the backroom, must be 40 years old. they sound beast.

get some good sticky tape, carefully tape it to the cone then slowly pull it back out ;)
