How come anything I record into audacity sounds terrible?

Which colour socket is the line in?
If integrated 'high def' sound card then probably configurable by the control panel application, my piece of shit integrated Realtek can have each channel assigned by clicking in the audio i/o app and choosing the function.

So I've been trying to configure audacity the last few days and I've hit a bit of a brick wall. Whatever I record, when played back, sounds awful. The sound sounds really distorted, grainy and well, shit. I've tried playing around with the input volume to no avail, it just changes how loud or quiet the shit sound is.

Anyone able to talk me through how I might fix this? Thanks.
No Doubt Goosey you've got Audacity going well after all this time. I had the same problem, tried even uninstalling and reinstalling audacity. Then I went to Edit / Preferences / Recording, and enabled Sound Activated Recording. I don't know why, but now it's all good!
