I'm on the lookout for some well produced, crisp, dynamic intelligent dnb with some nice drops and ambient breaks mixed in. Any ideas?? I really like Spor, Pendulum, High Contrast. Not too into the super heavy thrashing dnb that mutilates your mind.
    Thanks!

alright, if you like your DNB liquid try these. I'll assume then you have High Contrast stuff.
Drumsound and Baseline Smith - Stay Loose ( Teardrop)

    Syncopix vs M.Sauer - -X-Cellence-S
    True LIes - Kleer
    Reach OUt - Atlantic Connection
Moving in Transit - Electrosoul System
Rework - Culture Shock & Brookes Brothers
Coast to Coast (Feat.Louise Sm) - Matrix & Futurebound

See how you get on with them.

Spor is mind mutilation, pretty much one of the extreme edges of dnb.

Dnb has a couple of aspects:

    1) there's your mind mutilating fast sounding edge full of mutated basslines, labelled techstep or neurofunk (I won't explain the difference). Spor & Noisa & Ed Rush (WTF DO PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY LIKE PENDULUM GET TOLD TO LISTEN TO NOISIA? They're not frigging likely to be able to understand the music. They might, but not very likely, more likely to dump dnb as being too scary). Spor definitely does not fit into Pendulum/High Contrast.

    2) there's your housey, disco & vocal soul vibe, labelled mostly liquid funk. High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Calibre. Look out for releases by the Hospital label.

    3) you also have your dance floor smashers, sort of the pop side of dnb with guitars, synths and simpler beats. Some call it jump-up, some call it clownstep (which is a serious insult). TC, Clipz, Pendulum, Sub Focus. You'll probably like TC and Sub Focus.

    4) there are also other tracks which could be labelled jump up but nobody's calling them clownstep (yet) without the guitars and synths. Hazard, Aphrodite, Shy Fx, Benny Page, Matrix & Futurebound. You might like these.

    5) there are also classic and new tracks with very heavy ragga influences, ragga-jungle as its fans call it. A badman most always sings in these tracks. Mostly Congo Natty.

    6) there is also old skool jungle/dnb which sounds a bit different because of the different beats and arrangements used - check out tracks pre-97. 'Old skool' is not a proper genre name.

These generalizations and subgenres are bollocks but you might something useful above. I could add even more subgenres but they'd still be bollocks. Check out the wiki link in my sig.

As far as more intelligent beats go...you might want to check out.

    Telemetrik. - www.myspace.com/mylightyear

Ive been bigging him up loads. Lol. But his tunes are really clever they do a lot. He has an album dropping next year.

I would also recommend checking Breakage, Ruffige Kru and Commix… they are all pretty intelligent producers that have had somereally good stuff out recently…see what you think.

    Calibre = Intelligent DnB!
Also check out the Fokuz record label, they've got some pretty intelligent stuff at the moment...

Icicle, Electrosoul System, you might be into LTJ Bukem's stuff too...

To be honest, those three producers you have named cover most of the DnB scene, so just go onto an online record shop (Chemical Recs, Juno, HTFR, Redeye, Mirage etc.) and have a listen to the clips and find out what you like the most!

chase & status have been quality recently, hurt you is an absolute blinder

also check out bingo records, zinc's jump up is fairly simple and most of the other artists tend to do more liquidy dnb (sigma, d kay & jenna G)

as production goes i dont think there is a better album out there than dj fresh - escape to planet monday, a wide vairety of styles

not sure all of these would be classed as 'Dynamic' or 'intelligent' .. lol...

still good tunes but i dont think that's really what you would be after..but still look em up on Chemical Records and have a listen.

    LIGHT STUFF:
    some albums:
logistics - now more than ever
high contrast - tough guys don't dance (THIS IS EPIC)
Shy FX - sounds of a digital soundboy

    some sets:
danny byrd ft. MC ruthless - it's a danny byrd thing
    cyantific - sex education
cyantific - journeys through inner space

when i first started listening to DNB i hateddddd heavy heavy dnb and then a good mate of mine that got me into it told me that your ear will just take time and eventually adapt and you'll LOVE the dark shit... i didn't believe him but it happened. HAHA so incase you want help finding some awesome darker/heavier sets and some sets that are in between to get in you the mood!

    MIDDLE GROUND
state of mind next level shows
    subsonik - DNB MASSIVE
chase and status live at kiss100
fabric live 18 - hype and andy c
andy c - ten years of dnb arena (this is more hyped up jump around style but its still phat)
dj XO - 12 inches of fire

    now the DARKER stuff
ALL the lifted pod casts (4, 9 , 10 ) are my favourites
    teebee - pathfinder at kruswick
renegade hardware shows (particularly phace b2b calyx and gridlock b2b noisia)
    calyx live at pyro
    phace - breakbeat.co.uk mix

the heaven and hell mix by Unknown Error is fucking wicked as well. it's name says it all... the first half is really light and heavenly and the second half is dark and mind mutilating!
