So i have applied at Northbrook college to do Music Tech and DJ Tech and i have to write a 500word piece on why i am right for the course.. Just wandering if anyone can think of anything that they think will go down well!!

I know this is a personal thing, but im sure there are things i can say just to impress!

But you could add up the time of all your recorded mixes as a kind of trophy. You can also say how many songs you produced, how many patches/presets you created.

No, don't do that, that is seriously gay. You should just say how enthusiastic you are about music, DJing and the feeling you get from music and how music makes other people feel etc. Also, you could say how it is a form of expression and how you can transform your thoughts/feelings into a media that other people can enjoy, appreciate and possibly change peoples moods/feelings etc. I'm probably just rambling on now haha. Make sure you are enthusiastic though, not overly enthusiastic though, ah you get my drift lol.

    Don't be like this:

I like music. Music is cool and I like to listen to music a lot. I have 32 CDs and I listen to them all the time. Music makes me dance.

    Good luck!

    General advice:
    1. Never say anything negative. Even if something about you is not as great as it could be it can be twisted to something positive.
    2. Never lie under any circumstance!!!!!
    3. Make sure all spelling, grammer etc is perfect. Its not the forum.
    4. Give it a clear structure and don't ramble about pointless stuff.
    5. Really obvious but no explicit references (including drugs, sex, negative culture etc).
    6. Don't try to be funny in it.

    More specific:
Im not fully sure about what is needed for this essay but.
    1. Intro. A little about yourself. Qualifications, general accomplishments etc.
    2. Main body about how you are passionate about music and dj tech. What you do within these areas already. Why you think you would be good for the course. What you would like to do in the future and how this course will help you (don't put be the next Andy C!!!).
    3. Conclusion. A small summing up paragraph of everything you have said.

I have based this advice loosely on what was required for my personal statement to get into uni so don't quote me on any of it. It is personal to you and you will need to make it fit and flow with this.
    Good luck.

I had to do these last year and here's my advice. I'm a pretty good writer, too

Be different and be witty. Don't stick to the usual "I enjoy music because I can feel it blah blah blah..." Take an original approach. Start of in a way they wouldn't expect you to. Another element of writing a good PERSONAL essay is writing in your own voice. That means don't stick to the norm of what you've been taught as proper and all that shit. Don't curse either but instead of:

When I am listening to music, I tend to select songs that translate my mood

When I'm listening to music, I choose songs that reflect my mood

Not a good example, but you should get my drift. Also, you may be worried about showing off your command of vocabulary, so its up to you how far you want to go with this. Good luck man!

as a note of an interesting essay:
some kid applied to NYU (new york uni.) and his essay was about everything hes done in his life, and his last line was I havent gone to uni/college.
