I hope it doesn't make a black hole...things are just starting to look good for me, I'm about to move house, have a job, get my first decent sized pay packet which I'm going to spend very irresponsibly. I'd be quite upset if I just wasted the last two years and ended up getting sucked into a black hole.

Yeah we work on the publicity for this at my work...

I've got the inside word on what's gonna happen: "We have no idea what's going to happen"...

Seriously nobody has any idea... The think it should be alright though

    Are you serious or joking??

Maybe they'll create a whole tiny universe with really small people. That could be a possibility.

    We're all going to die!

    Yeah serious...

They've done some sums on a piece of paper, and some guy made a spreadsheet to work it all out and they reckon it'll be cool... But they dunno because nobodies ever done this before so they can't be 100%

We've all been advised to hold on to your ass and get praying when they hit the switch...

I want to know whats going to happen when they swithc it on and start smashing particles together. Hopefully not a black hole but will be intereting what they find out

No but if they are smashing atom's,wouldnt that have the same effect as splitting atoms? aka the atom bomb!

Then Switzerland may be no more after tomorrow.

Apparently they could create tiny black holes, but they would only last a billionth of a billionth of a second. its pretty exciting though.

They're not recreating the conditions tomorrow - there will be an enormously long period during which it will be fine-tuned before any serious work starts. This collider is not a washing machine - its not ready to go out of the box.

Under the same theories that foresee the creation of black holes, those same black holes will literally evaporate in instants. A small black hole loses more mass through evaporation than it gains.

Oh, the same sort of collisions that will take place in the accelerator/collider take place all the time in nature - around us. Enormously fast particles collide all the time - they could be doing so in front of your eyes. However - you can't see the results which are vanishingly small - and if you set up equipment to observe the collisions you'd be lucky to observe many in a given spot. The collider sets up a situation where collisions can be consistently generated in large numbers AND observed.

Dustek, I hate to break to you but you're wrong. We are ALL going to die tomorrow.
