Melbourne’s own Glyphic steps up for his debut release with a brooding EP that calls back to the early days of tech step. The title track opens proceedings with rolling breaks and a twisted bass line that lurks in the mix, setting a mood that is equal parts uplifting and unsettling. “Short Cut” takes things deeper, with hypnotic pads and pulsing sub frequencies that accompany the young producer’s jungle influences and keen eye for detail in his drums. The result is the perfect blend of old-school attitudes and forward-thinking progression; a dark roller which reminds us that the original influences and culture of drum and bass have not been lost on the next generation of artists. Glyphic is accompanied by Kolanek for “Breakpoint”, an experimental foray into the world of warped reece bass sounds and haunting synths. A more aggressive edge sets this track apart from the others, a perfect addition to an unmissable release.
