Audacity still the best free software or is there new shit available now?

Audacity is probably the most decent.
Wavosaur is also nice and the UI is very similar to Soundforge.

I've had Audacity trip up on me / friends a handful of times when getting to the end of a mix and it won't save / freezes.

Always use Goldwave now. When your trial period expires, just un-install and download it again or a newer version of it at the time
