does anybody know of a free photo editing software that i can use to cut-out part of an image?

i use some old skool MGI editor to actually edit the pics but the only thing i cant do with it is the cut-out bit, i had another photo editing software i used for that bit then open the PNG file with MGI but i uninstalled it by mistake and cant find the CD

see with GIMP, once u use the lassoo thingy, how do u get from that to having a PNG u can open with other softwares? i can cut out a section but if i paste it it just appears in a square or rectangle with a black background

the checker background is GIMP's way of showing an area of the canvas that hasn't got anything drawn on it

for file formats that support transparancy (PNG and GIF) such area's would show the background through

so you can either save it if you want the transparant area or chose flatten image to make that area the colour the same as your chosen background

So really it is downto what you want?
