DOA: Hey guys! What's been up in the land of Evol? Anything you'd like to give the good people of DOA an update on as far as your current or future releases or what you've been working on?
Mostly, we've been working on wrapping up our LP, which is titled "Era Of Diversion." The majority of the drum and bass on there is complete, but we've been working on some collaborations with artists outside of the dnb scene for some additional tracks. You can expect to hear songs featuring bands like Bane, The Sound Of Animals Fighting and a few others. Obviously we're trying to move Evol Intent into a new direction, so we just want to take the extra time to make sure that the LP is exactly how we want it. To put an end to the speculation, the album will drop sometime shortly before the new year. A lot of people might be frustrated with this projected release date, but we think that everyone will be pleased once they hear the final product.
DOA: As people may or may not know, The Enemy's electro outlet, 'Treasure Fingers', has been gaining quite a buzz in it's
respective genre. But he is not the only one! Knick is one half of breaks duo 'Hostage', along with Mayhem, who have also been gaining increasing global interest. He also has a project with Ewun called 'Minus Music'. Can you tell us a bit more about any of these projects and divulge any news as far as what is in the cards for them in the future?
Yeah, we all try to work outside of dnb as much as possible to retain our sanity because, in all honesty, working at a fixed bpm can become really frustrating after a while. The projects listed above are pretty much the main things we have going on the outside right now. Ewun and I have started another project called "Ludachrist" which is basically going to be an outlet for mashup-influenced mixes/bootlegs. We're about finished with our first mix and we'll have some good tunes to throw up on the myspace page once we get it all finished up. I'll have to divulge more information closer to when things are neatly-wrapped. "Treasure Fingers", Aj's project, is just flat out.. awesome. Gigantor and I both love that stuff and support whatever Aj does. Speaking of Gigantor, I'm pretty sure he has also been working on some electro stuff as well as helping out some Atlanta based hip hop guys with their production and recordings. I'm sure he'll spill the beans on that soon enough.
DOA: Having dipped in to multiple genres, do you all find that it's beneficial for artists to broaden their musical horizons, in general? Do you find that artists who work on cultivating just one sound are generally less experimental than artists who draw outside influences?
I think that there's a place for everything. For us, as musicians, we really need to feel like we are free to express ourselves however we want to. As I mentioned earlier, we don't want to be stuck writing music at 172 bpm. So, I would say it's more than beneficial for us to work outside of our dnb comfort zone and experiment with our music. We have all learned so much about production while working within the drum and bass circuit, so it has been really cool to apply some of those techniques to our work within other genres.
DOA: Any gigs coming up that any of you are looking particularly forward to? What are some favorite cities that Evol Intent have had gigs at and are always eager to go back to?
We all play interesting shows here and there. For the most part, our favorite shows go down in Europe. Aj will be traveling to Japan for a few shows in September, so i'm sure he's got a boner for that. Los Angeles seems to have the "biggest" shows in the US, so we all really like to play here.
DOA: Up until just a couple of months ago, EI were collectively based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Knick has moved to Los Angeles, Gigantor to Alabama, while The Enemy still holds it down in the A. Has the distance affected the music making process at all? Does Knick still function properly on the left coast without southern breakfasts?
I absolutely do NOT function properly without my southern breakfasts. Honestly, I miss that so much, but I guess no one gives a shit about that on DOA, so... no, it hasn't affected how we function as a group at all. Even when we lived together in Atlanta, we would rarely work in the same room. The truth is, we hate each other and we're in drum and bass for the money... and by the way, there is A LOT of money in drum and bass. Aj is on his 3rd Lincoln Navi, Gigantor just bought a helicopter and I've been eyeing this diamond coated bath tub for my hummer limo.
DOA: Unlike you fine chaps, many producers/DJ's don't post much on DOA, aside from when they have something to advertise. Can you tell us your thoughts on DOA? Do you think that there are more benefits to frequenting this online community than many people may realize?
I don't see why we wouldn't post on DOA. It's not like we're any different than anyone else on there. Shit, our first posts
about evol intent were probably made on DOA in the first place. So we've been on here since it started up I guess. It's just funny. There's no other way to put it. We all pass links to funny threads to each other daily. Gigantor and I were talking about DOA recently and I said that it is basically like a huge chat room. The board moves so fast and there's never a shortage of hilarious shit to laugh at. Who doesn't like a good hinning every now and then?
DOA: Top 5 dnb artists at the moment?
Calyx, Spor, Ewun, Apex & Noisia.
DOA: Top 5 non-dnb artists?
Well, I can only answer for myself here. We all listen to a really wide variety of music, and our tastes fluctuate quite a bit. We're all into old gangsta rap, idm, the whole new electro thing, rock, punk and hardcore. Common ground for all of us? I would say bands like Cursive, producers such as aphex twin or groups like NWA. All sorts of stuff..... Just now as I got out of my car, the last cd in my stereo was a Genghis Tron album.
DOA: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer the questions and for the awesome mix. It's much appreciated! Could you provide us with links where we can find more Evol Intent info, as well as any side projects mentioned in here?
Sure, and no problem. We'd do almost anything for this message board (including naming a song after it). EITBTCWTFBBQFTW
