Ok, first two tunes are horrid, clearly Hospital trying to push a 170 bpm James Blake-y "emotional" thing for the Guardian reader demographic, except instead of James Blake they got they got James Blunt.
Track three has a gorgeous pad and the tune is really interesting but they have that awful vocalist from that Enei album in to ruin it.
Track 4 I actually really like, the melancholy thing works well, he's got a definite knack for that kind of writing, fair play. Drums sound a bit sterile, and tbh so far he's coming across like a bargain basement Frederic Robinson without the production skills, the charm or the sense of rhythm.
Track 5 gets off to a good start, and then inexplicably turns into a hands in the air liquid dnb thing, although it's definitely one of the strongest tunes on here so far.
Track 6 - yeah, this is nice, he really knows how to craft a melancholic melody, lovely keys in this, and I'm a sucker for keys. oh wait, this vocal is excruciating. calibre remix please - dub version on the flip, i'll buy two copies.
Track 7 - really good, solid groove, evolving pads, a sense of progression. excellent stuff.
Track 8 - like track 6 but not as good, except for the lack of a vocal which makes it better than track 6.
Track 9 - some Joshua Kadison type shit on here on the intro, Billy Joel or Meatloaf, can imagine DnBForum members who post in Dispatch threads listening to this when their first girlfriends dump them for someone who doesn't drag them to DnB nights. That vocal is horrid though, sounds like an anime schoolgirl, cool bass riff though and that loopy melody is gold. He really has a gift for string arrangements and the keys doing that shifty thing under those strings is pure class.
Track 10 - more pianos! slower though, so this must be the last one. ooh the guy from Snow Patrol or Razorlight is singing about love gone wrong, didn't see that coming, waveform getting fatter so there's going to be a drop in about 64 bars, filtery amens, this is actually pretty damn nice, shame the vocal is there, because i could actually dance to this or even play it out. Needs a SPY remix with a dub version on the flip tbh.
In summary - not quite as good or as adventurous as the Frederic Robinson album, lovely consistent melancholic vibe across the whole thing, definitely feels like something I can imagine people liking if they really wanted to listen to something that was a bit like Nick Drake but they didn't feel comfortable listening to anything that didn't have a euphoric drop and a two-step break in it.
