EQing on older sets?

Having listened to a lot of D&B over the years, I'm puzzled as to why some DJs weren't using full cut EQs in their mixes before 2005/2006 in some cases? Obviously in the mid 90s there weren't often 3 band EQs but with the DJM 500/600 mixers etc there were.

Did someone start using them on double drops and everyone followed suit?

I have a few sets from a couple of years ago that have some shocking eqing by some big names.
