So quick question as im researching new techniques,
In an audio track with a sample would it be best to plugin
An ADSR filter then EQ
Or EQ to ADSR to EQ?!

Really depends on how you want to go about it and what your trying to achive.

EG
If your simply just rolling off some low end on a reese to give the kick some space you may want to EQ this 1st. Then you can adjust the atack, decay and sustain etc for what ever need.

Where as if your making some crazy neuro-esque sound you may want to do all the edits 1st, like playing with the sustains, attacks etc etc then resample then EQ it to get the desired frequency range.

There isint any right or wrong way tho, just play about until you are happy.

Source > Filter > Distort/Compress/etc > Eq is the best option imo, the Filter is sure to add its own characteristics to the sound which may or may not be wanted, so makes sense to hve the eq after it to deal with that. having 2 EQ's eitherside of a Filter seems a little pointless to me?

dont know what you mean that would be the best chain for, but youve probably got a very specific sound in mind. were talking in general terms. and as such there is no real right or wrong answer.

not that specific, source (sample, OSC, etc) > ADSR filter > other stuff > EQ

Putting an EQ before the ADSR filter, would leave you with less control over the effect of the filter, unless you add another EQ on the end, but that uses extra CPU and i cant see any benifit of it, you are right there is no right or wrong, but why waste processor time if it doesnt benifit the sound?

that chain is extremely specific, or do you really suggest that it is applicable to all sounds? again it sounds to me like you are talking about a specific sound rather than a general technique.
it could very well be youd want to eq a little to get the sound right before you filter. also i think hes talking about a volume asdr.

Very true mistz
So i spent the morning on this topic of research,
Found that the ADSR is best to go before the EQ's
And dont worry i usually series a couple of EQ's to get a tighter sound
And agreed EQ - Filter - EQ is pretty pointless lol =]
So whats the general rule with the attack on the filter
Is it best to go no higher than 3 or is it to taste?

By definition, a filter is a specialist eq. I have found most eq work to by corrective therefore I would always end with an eq, if needed.

With regards to the ADSR of the filter there are no rules, tweak away and if you like it, find a way to use it. You will find different manufacturers filter controls will respond differently, especially with the envelope controls.

Peace
