Effect in Sub Focus - Timewarp

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction about achieving an effect I've heard in quite a few DnB tunes, but most prominently in Timewarp:

An example is from 0:46 - 0:49 ... not the beepy main synth itself but the effect on it: I can't work out if it's just being increasingly heavily sidechained as a filter opens up or whether it's something else?
Anyone got any ideas?

My guess would be a sidechain compressor and just automated threshold
