I wanna have a go at mixing hip hop, but have an embarrassing bad knowledge of the genre... can anybody recommend some bread & butter tunes as a starting point, specifically ones i can get on vinyl at the moment or on the legal download?

Ah wicked, cheers lads :)

I did a search but the words 'hip' and 'hop' are too short according to the search thingy...

Cool, I recognise some of them names - MF Doom and Madlib mostly from maloney harping on about them, I youtubed them a while back, some good stuff.

KRS One, Onyx, Jedi, NWA i already have some stuff by all them so i might start there and build on that.

Legendary as ever!

its not hip hop its rather poetry and live sketches experimental, yah buck 65 i mean you can listen to it but you just got to see him live because he plays and interacts with the crowd, but yah as far as hip hop goes east coast old skool lyrical hip hop will always be the one

Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Samon Kawamura, Ras G, Samiyam, Flying Lotus, Madlib, MF Doom, DiBiase, Gaslamp Killer, Dilla, Percee P, John Robinson. Anything with these are artists are the best hip hop at the moment for all over times the East Coast Hip Hop Thread is where you need to be.
