Now before the obvious "fuck you" posts, hear me out....

I was chattin' wit some people the other night and I came to this conclusion, same goes for Breaks, and pretty much all EDM. Drum and Bass is a genre under the Hip-Hop umbrella.

Hip-Hop is not a kind of music, I mean corporate America labeled it as such but really HipHop music is more correctly classified as rap music.
Hip-Hop is a culture, it started as party's (much like raves) in the old project parks where DJ's would plug in and mix break records blah blah, I don't need to give you a history lesson...
Anyhow, the culture of hip-hop is defined by 4 elements:
1. Tagging
2. Break Dancing
3. DJing
4. MCing

Drum and Bass seems to represent all 4 elements.

Really hiphop MCing started off much like what most Drum and Bass MCing is today, Say a few catchy simple rhymes in between hyping up the DJ who was the star of the show; but as corporate America needed to package something they could market and sell, they made the MC the star and asked for songs.

My main point being, I'd say Drum and Bass IS MORE HIP-HOP than rap music. For the most part rap has lost 3 of the main elements, and we're just left with the MC.

This is why I've fallen in love with Drum and Bass, whereas the DnB party's have more of that raw hiphop feel than most "HipHop" partys nowadays, which basically consist of a bunch of dudes trying to act hard staring at the MC dissecting his lyrics.

So first off thank you UK for keeping hiphop alive....

and second off could you argue that I'm wrong?

of course dnb is hip hop,and reggae,metal/ rock, funk, jazz, house, hardcore techno and much more too.Its technicaly most advanced music genre on earth, best combination of everything that was there before, its evolution.Rolling with flow off rock, technique jam of jazz heavy metal energy, grime of funk and ragga vocals on top of digitaly perfect house progressive composition.Because some shit ass nigaz turnded mainstream side of hip hop into somethinf deeply sad doesnt mean that I will disagree with your opinion.

I agree DnB is probably the most musically diverse genre, but you're missing the point; it doesn't have to do with the sound as much as the vibe; you could say rap music is all those same genres cuz it samples them; HipHop/ rap started basically copying dancehall reggae soundsystems......what I'm saying is the Drum and Bass culture IS Hip Hop culture, but more of a UK ting

Judging dnb as whole thing is very different becose its so large complexly conected bag of its precursors.

i think what you are arguing is that the way both styles are presented are hugely similar.

dnb definately takes a lot of influence from hiphop, but to say its a genre under hiphop, personally na, the style itself is to diffenret

well yea, but isn't everything?

I guess maybe this is a tough argument to make cuz its not really an argument, but I still believe it to be true

the universal truth behind this question is somewhere middle, theres as much truths or points of view as the number of people thinking about this.I dont argue with you,you have truth and I respect it... just showing what I think,it may be far away from universal truth, who I am to judge this? just another blind no one

Oh it's definitely a unique vibe; don't get me wrong, I don't think it's "stealing" or a "copy", I just think that organically, you guys in the UK grew you're own hiphop culture with it's own feel; I mean I witnessed it a bit by goin' to Inno in the Sun; but the main thing is it effects people the same way, its uniquely your style, but its still hiphop culture;
as an analogy, liquid has a different "vibe" than jump up; but its still drum and bass; but instead of the common denominators being tempo, amens, and hard bass; the common denominators in hiphop culture and drum and bass culture are the 4 elements, and pretty much identical

culturally they are the same yes, but are musically?
and surely the musically is the definition of a genre?

yea, maybe I'm trying to think to deep as I have my little pre game drinks before my Friday night; but I'm pretty convinced it should be a universal truth; and maybe it would grow the genre? another question would be is growth actually good tho? cuz with growth comes commercialization and bullshit ala rap music

Drum and bass is already commercialised to an extent, as are most genres. Hip hop is way more commercial than most other genres but the commercial shit is stuff that I don't even consider hip hop the real shit is kept underground.

i have thought about this before, i kinda felt like in a mix when the bassline comes in its like a new MC coming in with a different vibe, i think i got that fidea rom wu tang or something.. if you listen to wu tang, they have different vibes when each MC comes in, and its like in a dnb mix when a new track comes in

Its all just music

Why does everyone have to label it a certain way?

Just listen and enjoy it

Drum & Bass is Drum & Bass Jungle is Jungle RnB is RnB

You dont find the latest Drum & Bass album in the RnB section of a store

Music is music tho it dont really matter what genre its placed in tho does it

Lets just enjoy it and look forward to whats to come
