You probably don't want or need dual suspension if you are mainly using it for commuting. The bike I was using for downhill mountain biking was a hardtail and that's just fine as long as you are a man about it. It will be a lot lighter and easier to cycle around. If you do get a dual suspension bike then make sure you can lock out the back brake as it will make the commute ride a lot easier.

i did originally get a mountain bike for riding to work b2b bit of offroading.. thinking itd be okay..

but ten mile ride felt like 20 miles.. coz the tyres are like riding thru mashed spuddies

so in the end i got 2 bikes.

If I should get a bike to ride to my work, three things could happen:

    1) I arrive at work the next day. At night.

    2) I get stolen on the first corner.

    3) I get run over by a bus, or car, or even other bike.

Unless you're planning on doing some real mountain biking, as opposed to just riding some dirt trails that aren't very technical, pick up a cyclocross bike.

    Firstly: Dwarf hahahahahahahaha

Secondly go and see if you can try a few different bikes in a bike shop. It will help you workout what you want. I think a lot of bike stores may have 2nd hand bikes around they can shot too
