Digiworx is the combination of Shifta aka Hoax (Matt) and DJ Tron (Rich) from Torbay, Devon. They started working together around three years ago making drum & bass and recently had their first EP out on DJ Phantasy's Easy Records label. Recently they've also started making dubstep under the name Genetix for the Z Audio group of labels. We spoke to Matt and Rich to find out what makes them tick...

What's your take on your music?

"Original Sin has been a strong influence on our sound, he's such an influential producer for jump-up and we think he inspires most jump-up producers. Even now you can drop an Original Sin track from years ago and it will still devastate the dance floor.

Recently we've been delving into the more liquidy and jungle side of dnb. There are a few good examples in our guest mix, check out Listen To The Rhythm, Monster and It Takes You Back. We think it's good to show as much versatility as possible when in the studio because you don't want to be labelled as a one trick pony.

We do our own thing when producing dubstep. We stick to dnb style mixdowns for it which helps give our tracks a full weighty sound. You can hear a lot of our dnb ideas slipping into our dubstep productions. This formula seems to be doing us proud at the moment."

Like you say your dubstep seems to mix well with your dnb, a lot of 'wobble' is involved...

"Yeah, it seems these days you need a strong high end to give a track the energy and pace it needs to rock the dance floor. A lot of "wobble" is definitely involved as that seems to be the leading style of dubstep at the moment and the style we enjoy producing the most."

Talk us through a typical day in the studio...

"Usually Matt will start off by coming up with some drums, whether it's dnb or dubstep. Once happy with them Rich will start on the synth work. He has a good ear for producing synth bass sounds where as Matt's talents lie more in the drums department. When we've got a good drum pattern and bass structure down we start looking at building an intro and finding some interesting samples to use. From there the track usually falls into place."

Are there any plans for an album or collaborations with big names?

"DJ Phantasy recently spoke to us about wanting to do a collaboration so we'll see what happens there. As for an album we'd definitely like to do one in the future as we feel we can cover enough different styles to create a great LP. "

How do you think the south west drum & bass scene compares with other parts of the country?

"The scene down here has always been healthy, but in comparison to a place like London it's small, especially where we live in Torbay. We've ran various nights in the area which have done well though and continue to do so until this day. Plymouth and Exeter have strong scenes as they have the universities which are always an advantage."

    What's next for you?

"We have two dubstep EPs ready to drop on Z Audio and Audio Phreaks which we're really looking forward to. We're also starting a monthly residency at Just Skank in Manchester next month which is exciting".

Haha, I see what you mean. But only Shifta really uses an alias in Hoax - as they're names both used for making dnb. Digiworx is their duo name (like Kamanchi for Krust & Die) and Genetix is for a different genre - like Redlight for Clipz.

Still love Utopia as well (by Shifta/Hoax). It's not featured in the mix above

Nor do I. Kills the vibe of a dnb rave these days, now the novelty has really worn off

Guess these guys just want to appeal to as many people as possible - got to look at the business side of things. And it's tough out there atm recession n all.

Still got some dirrrrrrrty bluefoot sets, but yeah they're no more
