decks + mixer connection

hello, sounds abit stupid but what is the best way possible to have your decks connected to your mixer ie in phone or line? grounded to the mixer? one in phone, one in line?
ive tried most things but cant get the sound crisp and sharp, its often muffled and distorted.

They should both be plugged into phono. One deck on one channel and then the second on the other channel. Deck should be grounded on the mixer as well, like you said (y)
 
also, make sure you gains are set low, your needles are clean, and that there is a good connection between your cartridge and the bit that it screws into.
