Over the years iv read some complicated ways to explain this device.
So for you beginners i thought id post this up

Compressor - Made Easy - Single Band Compressor

THRESHOLD
When the level exceeds (level, threshold) compressor turns down the level ...
(How much is called the RATIO)

RATIO
(3:1) = if output goes 3dB above (exceeds) the threshold point
the net Output = 1 dB above Threshold point!

(High Ratios level down more aggressive)

Signal still exceeds the threshold but not as much as if there was no compression

(Brings output level closer to the threshold point)

Bring down peaks & Turn up gain of compressor

Also the
Attack/ Release = how long till...
attack= volume turns down after exceeding threshold
release= till volume turns back up after it has droped back below the threshold

NOTE = IF YOU REALY JUST TRYING TO PUSH LEVELS UP USE A MAXIMIZER

ALWAYS :rtfm:

Nice one! Only explanation i've read so far for compressors is that if a compressor exceeds a ratio of around 10:1 it begins limiting instead (hope I'm getting this right :))
