Dog's my mum own's 5 cats the only time they bother with you after the age of 1 or 2 like dan said is when they want feeding... A dog is loyal, and friendly, cats are stuck up and dont bother with you unless its on their terms

cats are wonderful, in a very human way.
dogs instinctively will create a relationship with a human, and will continue the faith to their master, even if he treats them badly. That will just translate in their social behaviour, ie beaten up dogs have aggressive behaviour, whilst spoiled dogs will bark at anyone close to them.
Cats on the other hand, do not have masters, just feeders/landlords initially, and friends in the long term. They will bond with humans too, but only after they have spent time with them, and reached to a conclusion that this person is trustworthy for me to lay on my back and let him rub my belly. But at the same time, cats are vindictive, if you cross them, they'll hold it on you, and their trust can be broken. If a cat is beaten up, it wont make it aggressive towards other cats or humans, it'll just run away.
Imo, cats are much closer to a human friend than a dog. Dog owners need to be pack leaders, alpha male, otherwise the dog will assume that position, and then your relationship is screwed. With a cat you can just be your self, and if you're good with making friends, you'll get along just great with a cat.
If you're bossy and self centred, then get a dog, who will be stupidly loyal to you.
imo etc... cats rule!
