Bristol lacking in D&B

I've been coming to Drum & Bass nights in Bristol for the past couple of years, but since I've started Uni here in September it seems like it's house, techno and future garage nights that are dominating, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this? And is this common around the country?

It is slightly lacking unfortunately.. run @ motion is always a good shout though, especially with the upcoming RUN VS RAM event there on Nov 2nd. There are some decent nights around few and far between.. dispatch had a night here a few days ago and there's a critical night coming up in November too. In terms of weekly events there isn't much of a stand out night though.

I don't think it's neccesarily a bad thing.. it has definitely encouraged me to spread my wings a bit and take different genres on board, it has definitely helped me be less of a narrow minded dick :P i've been pretty big on the grime nights here lately.. good shit!

Back in my day of being a student, we had Run every week at Native, Carasel used to put on Ambush nights at Timbuktu Wednesdays and there'd often be Thursday raves at Thekla/Bierkeller put on by overload.

Hospitality used to have monthly nights in Thekla, and there'd be a big rave at least once a month in the academy. Slightly before my time, Drive by was really big.

There is a gap in the market now, and if anyone fancies their hand at putting on a night there is opportunity. Problem is finding venue and financial backing!

Yeah there was a thread about this about 6 months ago. I wouldn't say its true anymore though - there's loads of drum & bass nights now, it's really returning to Bristol. The house and techno nights are bound to be the most popular at the moment due to it being the fashoinable/popular music to listen to. But that's not neccessarily a bad thing - it means you just get the heads at the decent dnb nights. You might need to look a bit harder for the right nights then; Intuition are putting on real good nights at Timbuk2, here's their next one (this Friday) with Overlook and Ruffhouse:

Inflect are running decent nights in the 160-170bpm range:

Jittabug are putting on some good nights (think Sam Binga has a hand in this):

Pretty sure Exit have the tunnel at Motion at some point this year or early next, but can't seem to find info on that. Other promoters are Luigifiyah, Red Dread Audio, Jungle Syndicate just had a night with Gremlinz and Raiden.

Basically, there's loads about just add the right promoters on facebook and the rest will be done for you. Check posters around Stokes Croft area as I'm always seeing line ups there.

just realised that this thread's first post is a duplicate of the thread that kezman posted and now i'm really confused. even the thread title is the same.

Moved here in September and can't help but agree. It's a problem tbh, it's got to a point where both rooms will be playing the exact same live in a house sound for the whole night. Fully dead / backwards, too many promoters following the herd. London has it worse though IMO. Every night there atm looks like it's been curated by Resident Advisor.

It's a shame coz the demand is actually there for that 140/170 sound but no-ones catering to it. This is the only thing I'm genuinely looking FWD to https://www.facebook.com/events/232844473536039/

Yeah I was at the Dispatch night, was really good. Missed Skeptical though which I was really gutted about.

Subloaded are back?! Gutted I can't go, already got a ticket for Just Jack that night.

Instead of Kiki611 reviving the old thread, I think he/she just started a new one with exactly the same opening post. I also found it a bizarre.

Well Newcastle's longest running/only decent dnb night of 15 years, is now bi-monthly which is fucking shit

I would really really love to run my own night and I think I would do a really good job at it if given the opportunity because I have crazily good ideas and such a passion for it.. I've wanted to run a label/dnb night for a while now tbh but I'm skeptical of just how far I'll get with it, I don't really know anyone within the scene really, which is kinda important I guess??

I'm definitely aiming to have a label coming to life before the end of the year, which I would hope to lead to doing a night at some point! just not sure how the fuck I'll go about it haha.

Lets get a few dnbforum/bristol heads on it then haha. I always thought an Auxillary label night at the Bank of Stokes Croft would work really nicely. Pretty sure they offer the venue for free on the weekend as well as it always gets busy no matter what - my mate ran a night there about a year ago, could ask him the deal.
