I used to use Norton, but thats a real system sucker, but worked well!

Then changed to AVG, which is free from their website http://www.grisoft.com/ But then got rid of that because it conflicted with my wireless router.

So now i'm running no anti-virus, but a hardware firewall!

Spyware, I'm using Ad-Aware and XoftSpy.
Both seem to work well, and pick up on files that each other miss!

Oh yeah, AVG is awesome! I use *just* the anti-virus.

AntiVirXP is wicked software (free-av.com mentioned above) picks up stuff norton/mcafee doesnt and has very low overhead too unlike the big boys versions

AVG is another great free scanner and unlike AntiVir scans incoming/outgoing Emails too

For spyware Adaware seems to be the staple program that people use but I'm not overly impressed with it.. Webroot Spysweeper although taking a lot longer to scan through is a lot more comprehensive in what it detects and is proactive in it's protection advising you of new startup items being added to the registry etc..

Also, try and avoid using Internet Explorer as your browser as it has major flaws in its security. You'd be much better off using Mozilla Firefox which is a lot tighter.

I do PC/Laptop repairs for a lving so I've got a lot of experience in this kinda thing, and this is what I've found over the years of sorting people's problems out.

    best i have used is:
    Kaspersky Personal.
uses less system resources than Norton but is better than the free scan type things (which i still run every now and again) like Adaware and Spybot.

i have a firewall in my router/modem thing but that doesnt stop nasties betting into your pc and sapping precious cpu power ;)

Just stick AVG / Avast free on there mate, as long as you use a bit of common sense there is no point in buying something. I personally use AVG Free.

If your using latest firefox and not looking at animal sodomy then you should be ok without the spyware removal

im on mac but when i had pc microsoft security essentials was the best i reckon, never had any probs with it, its free without trials or adverts for the full version and works well with windows pc, spybot and ccleaner are also decent as extras
