basics of compression

That s(M)exoscope vst (link at the bottom of the dogsonacid page) is pretty cool. Like they say, it helps to actually see what the compression is doing to the wave form.
Damn, I've just been playing with compressor settings for an hour since I read that article.

I love compression on everything mostly but the main mix. I leave that up to the mastering people and all.

really useful read. thanks a bunch mate!

and i didnt test this vst as of yet, do you lot recommend it?

It's free mate, so no harm in trying it out. It's just a help to see things visually sometimes. I know music's about the ears and listening and all that, but I find seeing things helps me to understand what I'm hearing.
More experienced folks might not have the need for it.

epic task...

compression is really useful...
you want a high RMS and fairly
low dynamic range in a full spectrum
dance tune... compression is
your friend...

wait what?

you actually want low dynamic range?

why?

i always struggle to find as much dynamic range as possible within a tune.

most definitely...
it wont stand up to other
tunes in the mix otherwise...

the loudest elements in your mix might...
but sounds will become lost in the background
against a weighty tune...

on the dancefloor i want my beats
to jump out of the speakers and
eat people alive...

hi RMS low dynmaic range all the
way...

The visual feedback..... but trust your ears as to wether it sounds good or not.

always trust your ears but...
i like a good visual indicator for
gain reduction on a compressor...
one the few types of processing
i think really needs that visual
element...

i find VU styled meters best as
they give a better indication of
average volume...

fav soft compressors...

Waves API 2500...
Waves SSL G Bus Comp....
Sony Oxford Dynamics...

API and SSL colour the sound so nicely...
but Sony is great for ultra transparent
processing...
