Something dark is brewing throughout the TOV group & Barcode is where the new breeds are beginning to spawn & unleash some of the biggest tunes of 2005.
Infiltrata & Evol Intent - Burn Rate
The american linkup begins with a huge amount of success as Infitrata & Evol Intent open with some epic synth lines & heart beat kicks surrounded by baby snares & razor sharp hi-hats. Each drum loop progresses to the well crafted intro filtering down then been halted by an aggressive reese line. Whispered vocals & disturbed bass licks churn in the belly becoming louder & louder before been hurled into the percussion heavy drum beats. Nagging congas pull the low end bassline to the fore-front of 'Burn rate' until a quick filter & a dirty reese drop smash it straight back in your face. There are some really well executed drops which prove to be a playground for any adventurous dj's out there who like to try their hand at something a little different from time to time.
Fans of the Evol style you've come to love will be a little surprised about the progression 'Burn Rate' takes but with a joint effort like this it can't be ignored.
Kaiser - Payload
Many may remember Kaizer's earlier outing on Barcode or even his dark masterpiece 'Nazgul' which appeared on Moving Shadow late last year on his shared EP with Rawthang titled 'Nu World Order'.
Kaiser opts for tightly layered technofide hi-hats to itch against the skin of the pipe sirens & closed filtered cymbals & drums, slowly building & winding themselves amongst each other giving a very menacing intro & dark stepping flavour so the detuned 505 filters can influence the track how they wish.
Pretty soon your head is nodding to the deep bass which has been enclosed tightly against every kick drum by the wire synth that transfixes you to the electro jump up sound. Encapsulating & very, very terrifying this is not one for the faint hearted.
Ewun - Hate Machine
2012 style scrathes & pistons work hand in hand moving mechanically to fire up the lifeless robot which they occupy. Hi-hats flow throughout the veins of the 'Hate Machine' bringing life to each joint, limb, & nerve ending slowly becoming more mobile until it stands & towers above all that is underneath it's monstorous self.
Screaming FX & acid techno bass vibrate until the first full movement of the machine powers forward & begins to run wildly among the overcast city focusing itself on any target that moves through it's all seeing eye. Neat drops with de-pressurised reese stabs flip the track so factory produced taps & light sensative shakers merge together to form ear twitching sounds.
A completley different style of track from what I've heard from Ewun so far & hopefully not the last.
T.Z.A - A Thousand Prayers
Resident Evil pianos chill the stale air while an ice cold breath haunts the surrounding corridors of the percussion & tainted vocals. After you feel a little relaxed with the tune one hell of a reese batters the system & encourages some nasty filtered amen loops to creep along & stir up some horrible images, before dropping into an absoloute onslaught of breaks & terror. Wild cymbals crash viciously into the oncoming kicks while clinical snare hits lash against the ferocious reese pattern. This is not for the faint hearted & will tear any of the dirtier dancefloors.
This is another solid release from the Barcode camp & you'll be spinning this for a while. My only critiscm is that there have been so many great tracks from the label maybe this won't be the most memorable EP you'll pick up, so grab it while it's fresh.
