mate, plug your xbox into xbox live, when you try and watch an Xvid video on your xbox, it will download an update which enables you to watch them. Basically just the codec you need. You don't need to convert it.

I use WinFF (http://winff.org) which is a basically window GUI for ffmpeg, which is a powerful audio/video encoder. The only problem is it may be a little confusing, try the default options for your type of conversion and see how it goes I say.

    Freeware btw.

Doesn't seem to do it mate. You have to do it via windows media centre, and that supports only wmvs

hmmm thats strange. I just stick the AVI file on my USB flash drive and stick it in the xbox and watch it straight off mate, it was connected to xbox live and downloaded an update that let me watch it..... Just as an idea, on the xbox menu thing where you have "game library, picture library, video library, and windows media centre" instead of using windows media centre, you can go to "video library" and connect to your pc that way, so it doesn't go through WMC. Or alternatively, if you have a USB flash drive, whack it on there and plug it into your xbox and go to video library, select your flash drive and then the video and i am almost 100% certain it will download the update for you. Let me know how ya get on.

nope, not the same, an AVI file is a container file, and it can use any windows codecs or any third party codecs like XviD or DivX. So basically XviD, as a file type, is an AVI file with video encoded with an XviD codec.
