hello every one, been producing now for about 6 months. how do you get that messy combination of snares and hi hats so that it sounds full. obviously there is ghostings snares but what do you do with the hi hats and shakers.

to make it sound effective ??

I suggest you go to youtube and type in Chase & Status drum tutorial.

All you will ever need to know about "splashy" sounding hats, shakers and breaks is there.

sometimes i use 2 sets of hats

1 set your normal hi hat however far appart you want them

then another quiter (bearly hearable) one going at 10 to the dozen snd it kinda gives a shuffley kinda sound and leaves no empty space.

you know what all thats simple enough, the only tambourine we should be discussing is breaks tambourine sound. how the HELL does he do that??

sometimes i think he uses pitched up metalic hits, obv i dont know for sure though

Layer your hats...
Use good samples...
Distort and EQ...
send to reverb...
spread them a little wider with a stereo
imager... this will allow more room
in the centre of your mix for the other
elements....
and make sure you "humanize" them....
by that i mean if its exactly the same
hat sample your triggering esp if
your not swinging (i.e straight 16ths)
it not gonig to sound any good... it
will sound static and mechanical... (unless
thats the effect your after...)
i like to set the quatize to swing around
30%... (this helps give them a more
natural feel) and the a little velocity
or volume automation (i.e some hits
louder than other) helps define
the accents...

wot i do for hats
use your standard arng. for short sounds
i like to use fuller sounding hats as my ghosts and some cymbals cut real short
in the spots as i need em
not sure if that makes sense

you can use high pass filter but set in time with the beat, FL sampler has that. No matter what shape the hat or tambourine is the filter will model it to sound in time with the beat. Simple but effective.

i layer one set of continuous hats, one in a pattern occuring every know and then, some shakers after the kick, a triangle every know and then.

then i layer about 2 or 3 choped up breaks underneath to add variety. Rock breaks are good to add some movenment( layered very subitly underneath a choped up breakbeat)
