What is the difference between 808 and 909 drums?

Where did these come from? And does everyone else use these alot?

The 808 and 909 were drum machines created by Roland back in the early 90's (may have even been 80's). They were used in practically every dance track from that era. Easy to use, and for the time, they sounded great. They were so widespread that almost all synthetic drum sounds originated from them. Even nowdays they are used a great deal. They also now cost a pretty penny because they are so sought after, and because they practically single handedly changed the dance genre!
