The government demand information from ISP's relating to internet activity, if the isp's give up the information, government comes a'knockin.

Also, if you get a little letter dropped through your door. Just claim you run a wireless network in your house and its not secured, anyone could have connected and downloaded those files ;)

That's true, BUT can they not see where the file was downloaded to? Like you have the save location that looks a bit like:"Windows/desktop/ThurmonMurmon'sPC"

Most ISP's wont allow unprotected access because you could tief your neighbours wi-fi leaving the ISP's alot poorer...

These will be the most excessive users though I would have thought, surely a lot more than 100k use torrents in the US.

(hopefully) It's the uploaders. otherwise It's exactly the same as going after weed smokers and not going after the dealers or the growers.

Shouldnt be going after any of them tbf lol.

In reply to previous post, no they cant see the location where the file was downloaded to on your PC, all they can do is see what public facing ip is accessing the content. Eg 66.228.155.54, the only way of seeing what computer that ended up on is if they had your internal ip address (like 192.168.1.3), but even then, most home networks use dhcp, so this ip changes often.

They might be able to sift through your router logs, but theyd probably have to knock on your door the day you committed the offense as route rlogs drop off quite quickly, and some dont even store logs.
