Basically, like you have an operating system on your pc, the phone does too. Reflashing a phones firmware wipes it completly, so there is literally nothing left in memory, then puts a brand spankin new bit of firmware on there to start entirely from scratch. Although i dont think this'll work because im pretty sure getting a phone blocked involves blacklisting the IMEI, so might have to look into how to change a phones IMEI.

But i dont condone this at all because i hate cunts who jack peoples phones. Theyre scum. Same goes for people who buy stolen phones.

"i bought it off someone who found it at newport train station"

Cant say i believe you (or actually, i cant say i believe the guy who sold it to you).

    Anyway, from yahoo answers:

Unfortunately even if you do unlock it and try using it on a different network it still won't be any use to you. As the previous answerer suggested altering an IMEI is illegal and carries a stiff penalty, each network blacklists using the Equipment Identity Register (EIR) and whenever an IMEI is added to the blacklist the central EIR server is updated, each network downloads the database from the central server rendering it useless on all networks.

    You mean unlocked or unblocked?

Unlocked - Phone is locked to specific network carrier, ie O2, and you want to unlock it to work on Orange etc?
Unblocked - Phone has been reported stolen and has been blocked, so unable to function at all?

You mean 3? As in the network 3? 3g is just a data transfer type phones use to go on the internet etc.

    What phone is it?

When i bought a phone on ebay it was locked to orange, so i rung orange and were like "i have my phone which is currently locked to your network, but im going over to the US for 6 months in a few weeks and i have an AT&T sim i want to use over there, but i need a phone unlock code". They said they would usually charge a tenner, but since its cos im going to the US they'll do it for free. And they gave me an unlock code and guided me through it.

But previous posters are correct, it can be done in dodgy shops and markets, its a case of entering an unlock code, some for your phone might be knocking around if you google around a bit.

Yeah Dave, if the service provider can't do it, you can get it done for about a tenner at most mobile shops
