    better speakers?

turn down the speakers, turn up volume on the mixer?

    line or phono?

turn up the treble(mid) more and listen to the snare untill you can isolate the mixes in ur head..
praps ur monitors are just bottom heavy..

What I do is plug my mixer into the mic bit in my Imac then run it through Logic and plug my speakers into the headphone socket.
I open the channel eq in logic and add treble or reduce bass it depends really.
If im mixing at night I turn the bass down abit.
I do this so my eq on the mixer can stay the same as if you where mixing with decent speakers
