Hmm not to sure bout free stuff, but if u are a complete beginner i would start on fruity loops as it is probs the easiest and not too pricey.

Reaper is cheap/free and quite good from what I've heard.

my workmate installed reaper on his
work computer recently...
chopping samples is much much
better than whistling while you work....

the program looks alright esp for a
free sequencer... if free is the notion
then i would agree... download reaper...

or u can pick some demos up of FL / reason whatever to see if u like any one in particular
