Cubase Starter Thread (Basics, Tips, Tricks)

I have a question.
Where does one put all their samples? E.g. I have one big folder with all my drum samples and other sample packs, do I put them in the media bay, loop browser or sound browser?
And once i know where to put them, how do i put them there?

Also, what is the best way to program your drums? Arranging in on the sequencer as audio looks like a good way to go as you can process each individual hit. Can you do that but by using midi instead?

Thank yo!

heres a cubase question...how do i set up my midi keyboard to it?......ive just brought cubase 5....got it saturday.....im a reason 5 user....and not even toyed with cubase yet....thanks for the thread on cubase too.

I just keep my samples in a folder and then go "import audio" in the cubase menu, you get previews of the sounds. The media bay is for you project specific audio afaik.

I process all my drums in audio, but if you wanna do it in midi you can use beat designer or a sampler, but you don't have as much control over the individual sounds this way imo unless you have loads of instances running what defeats the object.

It depends what midi Keyboard you use. Mine's plug and play usb.

mine too..its a keygen 50 or something....plugs in using a usb

Afaik It should just work. Mby have a look at your midi devices as your cubase might not auto detect it. Hopefully you don't have to program all the midi CC stuff. Have you installed drivers/software for your keyboard? I'd suggest you do that if you haven't already.

Just plug it in before you start cubase and it should work fine for playing notes and such. If you wanna link parameters to your keyboard then i have no idea :coffee:

Hmm, anyone know if it's possible to timestretch audio files by dragging them like in FL?

I'm 99% sure I saw it in that mefjus video tutorial in the bass video.

I am now demoing Cubase 7.5 and really wish to finally switch to it from Logic and Ableton.
Everything is just working as I want in Cubase and I love the workflow.

But I have one major annoyance with it and I really hope that someone can help me to deal with it.

Every time I press "Play" button there is a noticable delay between the actual button press and playhead starts moving. Its about a 8th note long with 175bpm. I can clearly see that it is not a latency issue(I have Scarlett 2i2 with 5ms latency) because "Play" button lights up immediately but the "Stop" button "pushes out" with a delay.

Its feels like a pre-roll but it is turned off. And this affects vst drum machines like Geist. For example I have a pattern in Geist and after I click "Play" with playhead at first bar first beat I can see and hear that pattern starts not at first beat but it plays some last notes (the time of delay) and after everything goes in sync.

Of course it is not a big deal but I really wish there is a workaround.

5 Ways to make a sub bass fit better with a kick(Intermediate)

This tutorial gives 5 techniques available to try and make a sub and kick sit together in a song.
It requires the use of a spectrum analyser so if you are unsure about setting one of these up please watch 'Setting up a spectrum analyser in cubase' first.

Part 1 covers:
- An explanation into why it is so important that the kick and sub don't fight for the same space and what this means.

Part 2 covers:
- key changing
- Octave changing for selected notes
- pitch change of kick
- remove sub parts of the sub and high bass combination

Part 3 covers:
- Compressing the sub with a side chain compressor being triggered by the kick

as in a delay with your midi controller or when you press the software play button?
Never experienced this in 7.5.2 so far!
