    Decent recording software?

i was wondring if anyone knows of any decent (cheap) recording software
i'm looking for something fairly simple, plug & play stuff, with a lead straight out the back of the mixer and in the mic socket on my laptop
i'd rather it was free, but if there's any commercial stuff i can probably get it from the library @ uni

    thanks in advance
