Not going into details, but some very nice gear, secondhand though because I'm stingy.
Anyway been listening to a load of dnb from all years.
The very early jungle stuff is pretty hard on the ears on audiophile equipment for obvious reasons. Wonderful inventive beats but ow! You have to listen to it loud.
Then around 1995 the sound become... beautiful.. the producers have better equipment and know what they are doing. Warhead had me in ecstacy.
Around 2000 though the compression factor kicks in and the volume wars really detract from listening. At high volume the music sounds great but at low to medium, a lot of overcompressed, that is clipped, dnb sounds like bollocks on quality neutral (unforgiving) speakers. I won't name names but you can guess the guilty parties. Things get worse with each passing year - so much is crammed into the sound envelope that the music becomes Ricky Martined.
