Is it okay to put a little overdrive on the whole snare, or just the highs. Its quite obvious on some jump up tunes.

If I have different layers I'll probably process each one separately. That sometimes makes it sound as though a particular area of the spectrum has more distortion. I won't apply distortion to an EQ band of a single sound though. I'll either distort the whole thing or none of it.

That's not to say it can't be done or that it won't sound good though.

anything is ok if it sounds good, and as ''good'' is subjective, everything is ok :D ....although that doesnt mean everyone wil like it, or that you wont blow your speakers in the process :P

I like using tube saturation on percussion, no need to go crazy with it, and I find it works best in the top end, 5khz+, although mid-range can be nice too

I almost always put a parrellel mix buss on the entirety of my drums eq out the bottom 200hz crank the fuck out the compresser then overdrive... pull the channell all the way down and slowly bring it up til you can bare here it
