oh hai

I need a laptop for a live/dj routine (without serato). I already have a semi powerful 2yr old desktop (which still has a lot of upgradeability left). I do some odd gaming and internetz, so I'd need a laptop to work the live thing on.

I'm torn apart. I produce on my pc, and now want to start the Ableton Live DJ game. Vinyl is not a must for me and I'm not really keen on getting Serato, which would cost me 2x Technics, a mixer and the Serato thing as well. I only have a regular 'hifi' turntable. I will be using a midi controller and a mp3 dj interface toy thing.

I reckon I have 3 choices.

1. Get a cheap laptop that can run Ableton and only has the basics and use it only on the live show

2. Get a dedicated music production/live laptop and leave the desktop for gaming and all the rest

3. Get a powerful laptop that can run some games as well and sell the desktop as parts (keep the widescreen monitor in the studio tho)

There are pro's and con's to all, but I'd like opinions from people who've done laptop live shows - is it risky to have all your production stuff on a machine that you take around (I do back up data naturally) to gigs? Can the cheap laptops run that stuff ok? Do I have a 4th choice (first gig in 1½ months time)? Will I be arrested on the border for my animal porn avi collection if i get gigs abroad?

Probably not, as far as I know animal porn is legal so long as it's not beastiality.
Just dont do it in the middle east, you get arrested for everything there.

in proportion to its body, theoretically but not practically the champ is the arctic squid. one of its tentacles is its penis. the whole squid is big as a golf ball kind of thing, so that wont do you much good. no sir, what you need is a hors. good old standard issue hors, might not rival the whale in dick size but they do pack a whallop, my word, dont they just.

My knowledge of animal dicks is (fortunately) very limited, so I'll get back the the question!

I'd say two is probably the best bet, keeping it all seperate is the way forward. Theres plenty of machines about that'd hack it no problem, but where live shows are concerned, I'd personaly like to have a dedicated machine. Number 3 would be fine if you were just using it for production and a few other bits, as it'd be a bit less crucial, backing up your work regularly to external storage pretty much solves minor reliabiliy issues there. But with live work, theres not really much room for error on the computers part, it goes wrong and your left in a right shitter!

Theres always the chance of it going wrong no matter whats on it, and there should be plans in place of what to do if it does go mad, but having the machine optimised for music and running nothing else but, will greatly reduce that chance. (y)

mine does got work tho ^^^

got 2x2.2ghz and 2gigs of ram for 350€ .. can mostly finish outlining every tune (unless its becoming reaaaaallly complex) - and for mixing down you could use the better home pc or export to stems

with 2x2ghz youd be sorted for live gigs imho, and you could easily upgrade to 4gigs. its a lenovo too, so not that bad, didnt let me down till now.

Thank you very much for this precious piece of information.

Ok I guess I'm going for a semi-powerful, dedicated music machine and keep the desktop as well.

Thanks.
