View Full Version : Scales
What are the most commonly used scales in dnb and jungle?
not as much scales, but most seem to have the tonic on F to G#

Ohhh really , i keep hearing different things .i read in a book that minor
scales are good. Tonic is same as root? Or not?
ye, tonic = root.
there's no good or bad scale, just different.
Never heard a DnB Track in B Flat mixolydian mode ;)

dont worry about scales and modes. most dnb artists are uneducated teenagers in their bedroom with a cracked copy of reason, so any old collection of notes are acceptable
A lot of house djs say that using a minor key "can make a sweeter vocal line" or make it more "plaintive" whatever that means. But tbh, fuck them ^-what he said
I rarly use major scales, because the music I prefer to do is dark and scary.
Even when you think a track sounds major (happy) it can be minor, like this one:

I have been trying to make some authentic style jungle. so I need to know what scales to use.
for the authentic chord pad sound.

i dont know anything about notes or scales im completely useless in this thread :(
I have made the perfect pad.
now all I need is the perfect combination of notes
really, there arent that many notes in western music, just 12. mash em about until it sounds right, and do a simplified version for your bass. pop tune done (Y)

just listen to it, no set notes that you must use for drum and bass, find a note you like and go from there surely? Its meant to be creative

Wait what.
But forget scales, just do what sounds good.
ok but lets say I want to know what scales are used
get a book, take a class, youtube, search google, ask a person who plays a real instrument like piano/guitar/clarinet etc, trial & error (fuck around on a keyboard), find a riff you really like learn to replicate it then alter it (rinse repeat), listen to loads of jungle (that's what ur making right?), ude your imagination, if all of that fails you suck - stop trying

I was being sarcastic mate, do u produce?
If you're a newbie to music theory I'd suggest to keep with either C major or A minor. They are the easiest, since they utilize the white keys. You can transpose afterwards if need be.
Again, there are no set scales used in dnb, jungle or not. In fact, some dnb doesn't even use distinguishable notes, let alone scales...
Just start with a chord that sounds good and go from there, just see how it sounds the best.

if you wanna make a standard jungle pad try re-sampling the chord and playingit up and down the keyboard. thats how the pad in this tune was made, have a listen:

This seems to be a bit kiddish, but if you need a few basics, try out this site: http://www.musictheory.net/
There are tons of basic music theory books. If you want to do that advanced try out some jazz books.
Probably someone wants to produce jazzy DnB :D
