You are a funny one karnage. Do you know how desperate many Islamic countries are to get access to the sorts of foreign bank loans and investments that could work wonders for them? Unfortunately they're being held back by the sort of attitude you're expressing. Charging interest underpins the whole of the commercial banking system and therefore it is the driving force behind capitalism. You must be incredibly naive to imagine we could do without it. Do you really think people will just lend you their money out of the goodness of their hearts? You expect altruism from the rich? Also can you not see that if I lend you a tenner tomorrow you're going to have to pay me eleven pounds back in a couple of years time just so that I don't lose money. It's basic stuff mate.
Europeans had the same problems with charging interest (usury) that the Islamic world has because of the same guy (jehova). Do you know what they did? They found interesting and creative ways around charging interest that still...funnily enough...amounted to the same thing. One of those inventions was the contractum trinius and fuck me sideways if Islam hasnt actually gone and copied them with their murabahah model of mortgage lending http://www.islamic-finance.com/item100_f.htm Its a load of bollocks.
Another example is the Ijara model where the bank buys the house and then 'rents' it to you. You then agree to make a set number of 'rent' payments that add up to much more than the bank paid for it (ie interest). At the end of the 'rental' period the bank transfers ownership of the house to you for 'free'... http://www.islamic-finance.com/item122_f.htm Does that sound honest to you? Not really renting is it? Also rather suspiciously it's possible for the bank to set the level of rent repayments each year in line with interest rates. If that isn't sus I don't know what is.
The one thing all these systems have in common is that the bank makes a profit and knows how much they're going to make before they agree to it coz fixed rate terms is how money lenders like to roll. Islam needs to join the modern world and stop being so butt clenchingly dishonest with it's loans.
Also sorry but you're mum couldn't afford someone else's mortgage is what happened. She presumably wouldn't have been able to keep up the repayments even if she'd had a 'shariah compliant loan mush...
Lastly Malaysia has a dual banking system so it's people can choose between Western or Islamic systems. Basically they don't mind Riba afaik.

Unfortunately I know nothing about engines karnage. What I was trying to get at was that the Islamic money lending system is a bit of a joke really. It's much more of a hindrance to the success of a country than a help to it...basically Shariah compliance holds people back bubba. Not surprising really considering Muhammed had no idea of what would be required for success in a modern world. I think if he came back now this would be one of the first of his rules that he would throw out of the window.
Anyway going back to the point you made that got me worked up...the whole financial crisis had nothing to do with charging interest (which has actually made us a successful culture). Harold Fredrick Shipman[1] (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004) was an English doctor and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history with 250+ murders being positively ascribed to him.
On 31 January 2000, a jury found Shipman guilty of 15 murders. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and the judge recommended that he never be released.
After his trial, the Shipman Inquiry, chaired by Dame Janet Smith, investigated all deaths certified by Shipman. About 80% of his victims were women. His youngest victim was a 41-year-old man.[2] Much of Britain's legal structure concerning health care and medicine was reviewed and modified as a direct and indirect result of Shipman's crimes, especially after the findings of the Shipman Inquiry, which began on 1 September 2000 and lasted almost two years. Shipman is the only British doctor who has been found guilty of murdering his patients.[3]
