When I was a yout at Uni etc, I used to think it was cool to rep the latest arthouse movie & fob off mainstream productions just for the sake of it, even if they were the most piss-poor creations on all levels...

A handful of obscure films are/were that way through genuine lack of funding/recognition &/or content being "too unsuitable" for any mainstream name to be associated with & truly are hidden gems, or now championed as "underground classics" after a few select heads clocked them & word spread...

In my opinion they're the exeption to the rule, the rule being that obscure films are obscure for a reason, that reason being 90% of the time they're a crock of shit.

Watch Irreversible, dont know how obscure it is but its got a graphic 10 minute rape scene and a man getting his head caved in with a fire extinguisher.
